The following account simultaneously engenders apoplexy and admiration for Tunisian blogger, Adballah Zouari:
Tunisian blogger and former political prisoner Abdallah Zouari has been arrested yesterday, 15 September 2009 by plainclothes agents in the southern city of Zarzis.
During the 8 hours of arrest, blogger Abdallah Zouari was asked to disclose the passwords of his email accounts and interrogated about his most recent report published the day before on the banned Tunisnews website.
Mr Zouari was questioned about Human rights group’s members who have visited him during the last seven years and his interviews with the media. Mr Zouari was warned to stop making any statement that could tarnish the image of Tunisia, or face a smear campaign they can run against him by disseminating fake pornographic video for the purpose of sullying his reputation. How low they can stoop!
The man is a legend: released in 2002 after 11 years in jail, Zouari has been confined to an internal exile 500 kilometers from his family home in Tunis.
Though a court order rescinding his exile was passed last month, he continues to endure house arrest and harassment.
And yet his blog, Citizen Zouari, survives.
It is this tireless cyber activism that takes blogging to a whole new, significant level: the pluck, dedication and endurance elevates such bloggers above mere geekery and to the forefront of human rights awareness.
Which is why it becomes our duty in turn, to ensure that the abrogation of their rights do not pass unnoticed.
