Whither the Honour?

The following tragic story concerning the murder of Leila Hussein, the mother of honour-killing victim Rand Hussein, broke in The Guardian on Sunday.

Leila was shot and killed on 17 May as she walked with two women activists to meet a contact to take her to Amman, Jordan.

Her courageous decision to leave her husband following the murder of their daughter in March was matched only by her decision to speak out in an interview in April, with The Observer.

Leila broke boundaries by refusing to tolerate the heinous actions undertaken by her husband, and supported by her sons, and her sentiments resounded profoundly:

No man can accept being left by a woman in Iraq. But I would prefer to be killed than sleep in the same bed as a man who was able to do what he did to his own daughter.

It is a true tragedy, and one that cannot be discussed, aired, or posted too much.

Honour killings must be stopped, before more mothers and daughters are lost.

You’re kidding me! They killed her too?! I posted about Rand’s murder previously but I didn’t know that her mother has died as well. This is unbelievable, someone has to be put on trial for this savagery! My god! I am so angry right now.
