Earlier this week I managed to catch Be Kind Rewind, a movie that I have been longing to see for weeks.
While it did not fit as snugly into the easy-on-the-intellect comedy genre that I had envisaged, it did prove to be divinely kooky and oddly touching.
Directed and written by Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, La Lettre), the film is ameliorated with appearances by Mia Farrow, Sigourney Weaver, Danny Glover, and the adorable Melonie Diaz.

The beauty of the film – aside from the wonderful turns by Mos Def and Jack Black – is the amateur remakes of movies such as Driving Miss Daisy, Robocop, The Lion King, and When We Were Kings, a process dubbed as ‘sweded’.
When the dilapidated video store belonging to Mr. Fletcher (Glover) faces demolition, Jerry (Black), Mike (Def), and Alma (Diaz) band together to revitalise the store through their sweded collection of movie classics.
Precisely how they stumble upon this plan has to be seen to be appreciated; suffice to say, Be Kind Rewind demonstrates that less really can be more.
In case you have missed the showing, the movie’s website hosts a plethora of ‘sweded’ productions.
My favourite? It has to be Lord of the Rings – Sweded.
