Three cheers for Jordan’s Petra and Rome’s Colosseum on their accession to the roll of the New Seven Wonders of the World! The winner’s have been joined by India’s Taj Mahal, the Great Wall of China, Peru’s Machu Picchu, the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Brazil and Mexico’s Chichén Itzá pyramid.

Though equally remarkable, the Acropolis in Athens, Greece, the Statues of Easter Island, Chile, Cambodia’s Angkor, Turkey’s Hagia Sophia, and Russia’s the Kremlin and St. Basil’s Cathedral just missed out in the poll that attracted over a million votes by text and Internet.

Started in 1999 by the Swiss adventurer Bernard Weber, the campaign was held by his foundation, New7Wonders,  and attracted almost 200 nominations from around the world. While the voting process has been active over the past six years, it gathered pace rapidly in recent months as bloggers rallied around their local entries increasing awareness.
